InterContinental expands in India
Hotel group InterContinental has announced plans to increase the number of rooms it offers in India. By 2015, the firms said it will be operating 45 new hotels bringing capacity throughout the country to more than 10,000 rooms.
Currently in India InterContinental has around 3,000 rooms in its Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza and InterContinental brands. The group has also just launched its Holiday Inn Express hotels which will aim at the middle segment of the Indian market.
InterContinental Hotel Group’s managing director Asia-Australia, Jan Smits, said the firm would be teaming up with realtors Amrapali Group to manage six establishments under the Holiday Inn Express brand. Smits said around 70 per cent of the new hotels would be positioned in the no frills category. Rooms will cost between 3,000 and 3,500 rupees per night.
Managing director and chairman of the Amrapali Group, Anil Kumar Sharma, said the plan was to have six hotels up and running within five years. He added that hospitality and tourism in India has the opportunity for growth and the company was considering investing in properties in Raipur and Gaya.
In 2014, Amrapali will open Udaipur’s Crowne Plaza. The Holiday Inn Express hotels will be opened in cities including Patna, Kochi, Jaipur, Indore and Noida. Currently around the world, InterContinental is developing 501 properties similar to its Holiday Inn Express brand. It also operates under Indigo, Staybridge and Candlewood, although at this point there are no plans to move these brands into the territory, according to Smits.
